LOL

I have not had time to crack them yet.

Suburban survivalist had a good post about harvesting acorns that still gets the occassional comment. Someone was even harvesting pin oak acorns!

We have black walnuts here as well. But ours are likely volunteers.russell1200https://www.blogger.com/profile/16258915475311426433noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4969984002125158749.post-72484958904120363882011-12-02T09:34:21.640-06:002011-12-02T09:34:21.640-06:00The tree is also valued for gunstock material. The tree is also valued for gunstock material.Stephenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09752401490789789451noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4969984002125158749.post-86138120435353356262011-12-01T20:25:41.273-06:002011-12-01T20:25:41.273-06:00Plans are to do something a bit more demented than...Plans are to do something a bit more demented than just cutting down trees. Coppice and pollard techniques would be on the agenda.

It is the durability of the black locust as fencing that has me contemplating it. Most of the fencing has been trashed by time and hunters. Hunters in particular as they have cut it in so many places. We busted a group right before Thanksgiving on the small farm, but not before they cut the fence in 8 places.

The pricetag on fixing & replacing that much fencing... terrifying.Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17159095601570766616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4969984002125158749.post-66011517726211749172011-12-01T19:39:33.139-06:002011-12-01T19:39:33.139-06:00As you said your black locust is extremely nice fi...As you said your black locust is extremely nice firewood but a pain to harvest. I have found the best bet is to fell the tree and then wait a few years to cut it up. When the bark begins to detach from the wood it will usually take the thorns with it and makes harvesting, stacking, handling it much safer.

As for the pasture rotation nice things to know.
